SOLAR ECLIPSE APRIL 8, 2024

On April 8, 2024 there will be a solar eclipse. The path where there will be a total eclipse crosses North America from Mexico to Labrador. Locally, it crosses Lake Erie from just west of Cleveland to just south of Buffalo.

All start and finish times of the eclipse are about the same for this area. However, the closer you are to the centre of the band of totality the longer the duration of totality. The website listed below allows you to enter the name of a town or city and get the times for the eclipse. This website also explains how to safely watch the solar eclipse without harming your eyes.

Here is some information from the website timeanddate.com.

VIEWING THE ECLIPSE: DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN!!!

NASA suggests that you project an image of the eclipse onto a white surface using a telescope. You can also use a pair of binoculars with one of the lenses being covered.

On August 21, 2017, I viewed the partial solar eclipse using my telescope, a piece of cardboard and a whiteboard as shown below.

I also made a pin-hole camera. It gave a good image but the image was much smaller than using my telescope.
